Why are many first/second generation Asian-Americans kinda ignorant of Hawaii and California Asian history?
I'm second generation myself parents immigrants, but I was born here but consider myself more like " second and a half 2.5" gen because the majority of my classmates and experiences in the Asian community of Hawaii and California was around folk who were already from Asian families that have been in America for a long time. I'm just wondering why a lot of Asians outside of the West coast don't really know or care about this history unless they're already third gen, fourth gen, or later? Both state have played a huge role in Asian American civil and political history and will play a role in the future. In fact you could look up even court and news history of Asian American role and civil rights and find many cases from Hawaii's plantation unions to California's railroad workers and Japanese American farmers.1. There are only two Asian American senators in US congress, both from Hawaii Inouye and Akaka . Hawaii. In fact most of the Asian American senators East Southeast Asian heritage will continue to come from Hawaii. Senate being a powerful role in federal government this is important.2. California doesn't have Asian American senate reps but does send many Asian American house members to US congress. In fact the majority of highest levels of Asian American federal government representation tend to come from first, California, and then Hawaii.2. But nonetheless California has a long history and influence on national views of Asian American people and politics.

Don't know if I should move to Hawaii or Ireland (19 year old woman)?
I'm a 19 year old woman currently living in Puerto Rico. In September I will be moving to New York for two semesters of college, but I have decided to take that year to save up money and then move to either Hawaii or Ireland for a while. It's a long story. The point is that I want to know which of the two would I be more likely to find a job that could either provide housing, or leave enough for me to have a place. I want to live humbly, I don't care for big amount of money. I just want to learn about new places and meet new people. Another thing is what are some things I should know about either of the two? Where would I be more welcome, etc. I don't know if it's an issue but I am Puerto Rican, and I do have tanned skin and Latina features, would I come across racism or have a hard time acquiring acceptance? I want to live in a simple place, where it's not too busy. I lean towards Hawaii because of the familiar tropical environment although I know the culture is very different but I lean towards Ireland because it would be something completely different and new for me.So.. any information or opinions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance I'm a legal resident of America... Puerto Rico is part of the United States for those who didn't know .

Why don't many Asian-Americans visit Honolulu and the rest of Hawaii at least once?
Aside from the location for maybe a nice vacation, etc many of my fellow Asian Americans should visit Hawaii to see a majority Asian society especially on the capital island and city Honolulu Oahu.America has just two Asian senators and both are from Hawaii. 1 3 of Asian house of representatives members hail from Hawaii. Very interesting culture.I'm Asian from Hawaii and in the mainland when talking to mainlanders I noticed for some reason a much larger percentage of white folk have been to Hawaii or know someone living there compared to Asian mainland folk. I did tell Asian American female classmates at college all about my state, the heritage, and its role in Asian American politics etc and they were pretty interested.

Why do people in the continental US think people in Hawaii still live in shacks?
Every time we watch TV and someone mentions something about Hawaii, it always seems like they think we live in the ancient days where we live in grass shacks.Just letting you know, we have been part of the US for decades now and we have had electricity, buildings, shopping malls, houses built with wood, cement, or other stuff that other people do condos, apartments etc.We play video games, we have plenty of apple stores etc.I think people need to be informed. It's like saying polar bears in Alaska drink coke.Another thing, Hawaii has plenty of immigrants, and full Hawaiians hardly exist anymore. They are mostly part Hawaiian. We speak english just fine. Hawaii has plenty of asians, caucasians etc. Very diverse.

Senior Citizens: Do you remember when Hawaii became a state?
If yes, what do you remember about it becoming a state?Bonus question Do you think by the time we are done with the 21st century, that the US is going to have more than 50 states?

Is it true that Capt.Cook circled Hawaii because the natives were so big and tall and he was scared to land?
Hawaii was the last place he discovered before being killed. i heard that Hawaii had a chief who was over 9 feet tall.
