North Dakota Fighting Sioux Controversy?
I'm looking for some opinions from outside the ND SD MN area for this one.What do people from elsewhere in the country think about the big nickname controversy? The thing is that as an alum, and very proud supporter of all Native American peoples, I am very conflicted about the issue. One one hand, I saw how that campus integrated the genuine care and respect for the Sioux people, how the programs benefited both Native and non native students equally, and how it helped bring otherwise fairly naive students to understand this part of American heritage and American culture.On the other hand, it does not make me feel great knowing that Sioux tribes oppose the very nickname that is the centerpiece of the melding of these different cultures.When I attended, it was about the logo, which was at the time a rip off of the Chicago Blackhawk logo. Wrong tribe. So they commissioned an Sioux artist to create a beautiful, strong, proud rendition. And for a time, everyone was happy.Now, the name itself is under attack.So, my question, in addition to hearing your take on it, is whether it sends a message that I wear clothing with the UND Logo on it, and whether it makes me look like an insensitive prick, or someone who is proud of my alma mater, despite its controversy.Can I sit on the fence on this one? Do you think I look like I have chosen to side with the school's policy by wearing my jersey?
